Oklahoma School for the Blind graduates take first steps beyond high school

By Cathy Spaulding
Phoenix Staff Writer

Seven seniors followed the advice of singer Jeremy Camp’s song “Walk By Faith” as they participated in Parkview High School’s commencement ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the Oklahoma School for the Blind’s auditorium.

Dressed in blue caps and gowns they celebrated their final year of school.

Two seniors, Stanley Kyle Hodge and Salutatorian Ashley Renee Williams came from as far away as Lawton.

Camp’s gospel song says, “When I will walk by faith, even when I cannot see it well, because this broken road prepares Your will for me.”

The class motto, from Martin Luther King, reflected the theme: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

Valedictorian and Student of the Year was Alex Christopher Myers of Broken Arrow. He earned $2,000 in scholarships and won the Jazz Band Leadership Award and Jazz Band Roadie Award.

Hodge earned the Outstanding Musicianship Award.

Other graduates were Grant Thomas Lewis Breslin of Muskogee; Daniel Ryan Flanagan of Broken Arrow, Dayna Michelle Malaer of Collinsville and Jonathan Josiah Bartlett Selfridge of Park Hill.

John Been, executive director of the Oklahoma Lions Services Foundation, was commencement speaker.

Oklahoma School for the Blind provides residential and day education, satellite pre-school and outreach programs at no charge for Oklahoma children from infancy through 12th grade who are blind or visually impaired. OSB's goal is to help students reach their maximum potential.
