Two die in traffic over weekend
Otherwise, law enforcement says everything fairly quiet
From Phoenix staff reports
Two men were killed in weekend traffic crashes and several people were arrested for public intoxication, but overall Memorial Day weekend was fairly quiet, law enforcement agencies said.
Spotty rains thinned out a “moderately heavy” holiday crowd at the Illinois River, said Ed Fite, administrator of the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission.
There was some public intoxication at the river and rangers gave some tickets for littering, Fite said. There were also incidents of vandalism and theft, but no major occurrences on the river.
Some other area law enforcement agencies reported arrests for public intoxication, but dispatchers said there were no major incidents.
The two men killed in area crashes were:
• Andrew Wayne Perry, 24, of Hulbert.
• Damon L. Freeman, 33, of Little Rock, Ark.
Perry died in a traffic crash about 4:15 p.m. Saturday on County Road 440, 0.3 miles north of West Shady Grove Road in Cherokee County, the OHP reported.
Perry was the driver of a 1984 Chevrolet pickup that was traveling south on the county road when he lost control of the vehicle, the OHP report states.
The vehicle hit the ditch, throwing Perry out and running over him.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cherokee Nation EMS, the report by Trooper Zach Woods states.
Seatbelts were not in use, the trooper said.
Freeman died at a Fort Smith, Ark., hospital after being taken there from a crash at 1:08 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 40 eight miles west of Sallisaw, according to an OHP report.
Freeman was driving eastbound in a 2007 GMC Yukon at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway on the left, then re-entered the roadway, crossing both eastbound lanes and striking a guardrail, Trooper Robert “Shane” Allen reported. The guardrail impaled the vehicle as it left the roadway and traveled 150 feet, coming to rest at the bottom of an overpass.
Allen reported the driver freed himself from the wreckage after being pinned for about 15 minutes. Seatbelts were not in use.
