WAGONER — A one-time pageant queen and executive director of the Coweta Chamber of Commerce now faces charges of embezzling from the chamber.
Misty Dawn Edwards of Porter is charged with seven felony counts of embezzling $28,000 from the chamber. She also faces three felony charges of obtaining more than $2,700 by bogus check or false pretenses.
She is free on $10,000 bond.
Edwards was the chamber’s executive director from May 2006 until last November when she resigned. Authorities say the crimes occurred over several months before ending in November.
An affidavit filed in the case says Edwards obtained much of the money through use of a debit card issued to her for the Chamber’s account. It states Edwards used $21,609 for personal purchases and cash withdrawals.
She told investigators she would make restitution for the missing money but has not done so as far as Assistant District Attorney Gary Huggins knows.
He said Edwards could face up to 10 years in prison on one of the charges, one carries up to five years in prison and the others carry up to one year each.
Edwards was the winner of Coweta’s Miss Fall Festival crown in 1990.
