P.M. UPDATE: MPS Character Camp meets

Muskogee Public Schools recently held its eighth annual Character Camp which was attended by more than 120 leadership students who will be entering the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades from each of MPS 10 elementary schools and the 7th and 8th Grade Center. Also attending were adult sponsors from each school and Muskogee High School students who are members of Roughers Against Illegal Drugs. The theme was Let Character Light Your Path.

The morning session at Sadler Arts Academy allowed the individual groups to work on plans to promote character during next school year and general sessions where the students heard from special speakers. Mayor John Hammons spoke to the students about the importance of good citizenship. Carrie Haney, a registered nurse who is a diabetes educator with the Cherokee Nation, talked with them about the need to be educated about diabetes and how she was proud of them for planning a walk-a-thon for the American Diabetes Association. Sir Barry with the Knights of the Guild concluded the morning.

In the afternoon, the group was bused to the Oklahoma Music Hall OF Fame to begin the walk for diabetes which ended at River Country Water Park where campers enjoyed two hours of fun before the day ended with a cookout. Over the past two years campers have raised over $1,000 for the American Diabetes Association.
