Mayor to appear on TV shows

It’s been more than one month since John Tyler Hammons became Muskogee’s youngest mayor at age 19.
His cell phone doesn’t ring quite as often because he now gets calls at City Hall. That phone line is plenty busy, Hammons said Friday. And his two e-mail accounts are flooded with 100 or messages nearly every day, he said.
He has agreed to appear on the television show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader,” a quiz show that comes on right after “American Idol” on FOX network.
He returned a contract with the show by e-mail on Friday, Hammons said. There has not been any definite date set for that appearance, he said.
Neither has there been a definite date for his appearance on the “Dr. Phil Show,” he said. He expects to be on that talk show in mid- to late-August.
The show sent a producer to Hammons’ inauguration, he said. He expects the segment to be about his life and why he ran for office, Hammons said.
Because he is under contract with the “Dr. Phil” show, he has not responded to a request for an appearance on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show,” he said. His contract prohibits him from appearing on any other talk shows before the “Dr. Phil Show.”
Hammons was contacted before his election about appearing on the “Jay Leno Show” but hasn’t heard from that show in the last two or three weeks, he said.
He also has received several bids for him to appear on reality television programs, but has made no agreements to do so, Hammons said.
Most of the e-mails and telephone calls he receives now are from people who want to wish him well and ask about his campaign, Hammons said.
He responds to them as he can, especially to those requesting interviews, he said. The e-mails come in mostly from the United States, but also “from all over the world,” Hammons said.
