A 30-year-old Arkansas fugitive was shot to death Tuesday night outside a Stilwell residence by a Cherokee Nation Marshal.
Marty Workman, 30, had failed to appear for a June 2 trial in Fayetteville, Ark., and a failure-to-appear warrant was issued. Workman was facing trial on delivery of a controlled substance, according to the Washington County Prosecutors Office.
Workman had barricaded himself in a residence in Stilwell when Stilwell Police called for assistance from a Cherokee Nation Marshal special team, officials said.
Workman allegedly set a vehicle on fire and rolled it out toward law officers in an attempt to escape before 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Sammye Rusko, communications director for the Cherokee Nation, confirmed when Workman attempted to leave he was armed with a gun he was waving around. A Cherokee Nation Marshal shot Workman, who was later pronounced dead at the Stilwell Memorial Hospital, Rusko said.
The name of the Cherokee marshal who shot Workman is not being released at this time, she said.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is conducting the inquiry into the shooting, Rusko said.
“There is no reason to believe the officer acted other than professionally,” said U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling.
Sperling said he was given a preliminary briefing.
