July 02, 2009 12:46 am

The OSRC’s 2009 Illinois River Cleanup Event has been scheduled for July 10. This is a chance to take a scenic trip down the Illinois River, spend time with like-minded people, and get a free lunch, all while helping out your local river. The cleanup is scheduled after the Fourth of July festivities and during mid-summer to keep the river in ideal condition throughout the season. In addition to enjoying a free lunch after the morning’s float, participants will have a chance to win fantastic prizes, including two kayaks. The cleanup, lunch and drawings will last from 9 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m.
The cleanup is an annual event, coordinated by the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission. The event is sponsored by Georgia-Pacific, Armstrong Bank, Reasor’s Food Warehouse, STIR (Save the Illinois River), the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ), and the Cherokee Nation Natural Resources Department. The canoes for the cleanup will be provided by the Illinois River Association.
Organizations, businesses and individuals are invited to participate. The only requirement is that you pre-register by noon July 8. To pre-register or for information: 456-3251, or by e-mail at osrc2@fullnet.net.
