To celebrate its 50th Anniversary, AARP will recognize 50 Oklahomans over the age of 50 who have made a difference in the lives of others or an Oklahoma town or community.

Nominations are being accepted via e-mail or regular mail now through Aug. 8. Honorees must be living and do not have to be a member of AARP, according to Craig Davis, associate state director.

“We are looking for Oklahomans who possess the indelible spirit of our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a pioneering educator, activist and community leader who continues to inspire our association to make a positive difference in lives of others,” Davis said. “As we planned ways to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of AARP, we realized that honoring those who make a difference in the lives of others is a fitting tribute to Dr. Andrus.”

Honorees will be recognized at a State Capitol reception scheduled for Aug. 26, Davis said.

Winners must be over the age of 50 and live in Oklahoma or be a native Oklahoman who has done something to benefit an Oklahoma town or community. Winners must not be deceased. Winners need not be members of AARP. Selection of the winners will be determined solely at the discretion of an AARP committee. There is no cash award for this honor.

To make a nomination: In 250 words or less, describe how the person nominated has made a difference in the lives of Oklahomans or an Oklahoma town or community.
