TAHLEQUAH — The Cherokee Nation will be taking applications for the Little Cherokee Ambassador event that will be held in conjunction with the 56th Annual Cherokee National Holiday. The competition will take place Aug. 2 in the Tribal Council Chambers at the Cherokee Nation complex.
“The Little Cherokee Ambassador event is a wonderful experience for our youngest citizens,” said Joyce Bunch, event coordinator. “The activity is great way for young people to showcase their knowledge of Cherokee culture.”
Contestants will be judged on traditional dress, Cherokee history/traditions and cultural knowledge interview and the contestant’s poise and personality.
The event is open to Cherokee citizens who are between the ages of 4 and 13. The contestant must be of their age category on or before Aug. 30. Applications must include a copy of the child’s Cherokee Nation tribal member card, a copy of the participant’s CDIB card, and a short biography about the contestant.
The competition will include four age categories: 4 to 5 years of age, 6 to 7 years of age, 8 through 10 years of age and 11 to 13 years of age.
Prizes will be awarded to the male and female winner, first runner-up and second runner-up of each age division. The decisions of the judges will be final. The award ceremonies will take place immediately after the competition.
The entry fee to enter is $5. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. the day of the competition for participants ages 4 through 7 years old and judging will begin at 4 p.m. Contestants ages 8 through 13 will register at 6 p.m., and judging will take place at 7 p.m.
The deadline to enter the Little Cherokee Ambassador Event is 5 p.m. July 25.
