PM UPDATE: Groups aim to give blankets to veterans

Wagoner County Unit No. 88 Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and Coweta Eastern Star Chapter No. 520 are teaming up to form “Operation No Forgotten Heroes.”

The program is an effort to provide a lap blanket for every veteran in both the Claremore and Talihina Veteran Homes by Nov. 11, Veterans Day if they are confined to a wheelchair.

The groups will kick off their campaign July 27, the 55th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, said Linda Oliver, Unit No. 88 DAVA adjutant.

“The Korean War Memorial reflects the freezing hardships of winter, and during the Korean War there were a shocking 92,473 reported cases of frost bite,” said Unit No. 88 DAVA Adjutant Linda Oliver. “That’s why we have chosen to make lap blankets for all of our nation’s heroes (from all wars). We hope to keep them warm this winter so they will have one less chilling hardship of war to recall.”

Area residents can help with “Operation No Forgotten Heroes” by donating money or material and batting for the blankets.

Donations may be dropped off at the Coweta American newspaper, the Oklahoma Farm Bureau offices in both Coweta and Wagoner, at Linrad’s Quilts in Coweta and at the Broken Arrow Elks Lodge.

To contribute money to the project, donations should be made payable to DAVA Unit 88. They should be earmarked “Not Forgotten” and may be dropped off at any of the material drop-off locations or may be mailed to P.O. Box 696, Coweta, Okla. 74429.

Donations will all be accepted through Labor Day.

Information, contact Oliver at 688-0075, Jennifer Poston at 351-9812, Delores Hamilton at 486-4693, Donna Grozier at 279-0073 or Barbara Goodson at 486-2390.
