Published July 17, 2008 11:07 pm - Teen jumps from second-story window 18-year-old in hospital and on emergency detention
A Muskogee 18-year-old is hospitalized on an emergency detention order after jumping out a second-story window Thursday morning. Andre Adams is alleged to have tried to strangle his two brothers, ages 9 and 11, before jumping out the window, said Muskogee Police Public Relations Officer Brad Holt. Adams also is being detained on suspicion of two counts of assault and battery by strangulation, assault and battery on a medic and assault and battery on a police officer, Holt said. After the alleged assault, Adams jumped through the closed window and then fled on foot. When police caught up with Adams, he told police he’d just sent somebody to heaven. The brothers and their mother boarded an ambulance at the scene at Austin Heights apartment complex on North Main Street where they were treated by medics at the scene. They did not go to the hospital. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. Andre Adams was apprehended after running north on Main Street toward Harris Road. An OG&E employee spotted him and alerted police, said Police Sgt. Michael Mahan. “The man (Adams) was bleeding profusely from glass cuts,” Mahan said. After being cuffed to a board in the ambulance, “he inverted himself, got combative and kicked an EMS guy in the head and a police officer in the face,” Mahan said. “We think he may have some mental problems — he said he had mental problems.” Seven police units raced to the scene when Adams started attacking the medic and police officer. Nine officers tried to get control of Adams in the ambulance, which was near Harris Road when the melee broke out. Officers took turns trying to get the 18-year-old under control while spraying themselves with antiseptic because of the blood flying everywhere. After the suspect was again under control, police escorted the ambulance to Muskogee Regional Medical Center. An investigative report is expected to be completed today and sent to Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore’s office, Holt said.
