Dog shot through neck with arrow; police seek suspect

By Donna Hales
Phoenix Staff Writer

Police are trying to find out who shot a small dog through the neck with an arrow, said Brad Holt of the Muskogee Police Department.

Police were called to East Side Boulevard and Fredonia Street about 7:40 a.m. Thursday. They were told a small gray and black, mixed breed dog was wandering around with an arrow through its neck.

Police called Animal Control, who took the dog to Veterinarian Jim Risch at his Eastside Animal Hospital on Gibson Street.

“Risch successfully removed the arrow, and the dog is expected to make a complete recovery,” Holt said.

The dog was recovering at Risch’s clinic Friday, and someone has been found to adopt the dog if an owner doesn’t come forward, police said.

“I’m happy responsible people did everything they could to help the dog,” Risch said in a statement issued by his office.

Holt said police were told if the arrow had not been a “practice arrow” and instead had been one with a broad head for hunting, it would have severed an artery.

What happened to the dog is a violation of an animal cruelty law, Holt said.
