Ex-OU QB arrested in Eufaula

By Elizabeth Ridenour
Assistant City Editor

A former University of Oklahoma quarterback was arrested early Saturday morning in Eufaula on a drug-related complaint.

Jamelle Holieway, 40, was arrested at approximately 2:30 a.m. by McIntosh County Sheriff’s deputies as the result of a traffic stop, said Deputy Tim Turner.

Holieway played at OU from 1985 to 1988 and is a former two-time All-Big Eight Conference quarterback.

He became a household name with many Sooner fans when he became the only true freshman quarterback in NCAA history to lead his team to a national championship during the 1985 season with a win over Penn State in the Orange Bowl.

He currently works as a sales representative for Oklahoma Healthcare Solutions, a Wilburton-based company. He travels the state promoting the company and speaks to athletic organizations. He was named Big Eight Newcomer of the Year in 1985.

Holieway was in Muskogee earlier this month at the Hilldale Speed and Conditioning Camp where he spoke to a group of players.

Holieway was a passenger in a black PT Cruiser being driven by his wife, Turner said.

“I approached the vehicle, and I could smell marijuana coming from the car,” Turner said.

When Turner asked Holieway to step out of the car, Turner found the marijuana next to the seat.

“Myself and Deputy (Shawn) Ray observed him drop the bag the marijuana was in,” Turner said.

The driver of the vehicle, Holieway’s wife, whose name was not released, was not arrested.

Holieway was booked into the McIntosh County Jail on a misdemeanor complaint of possession of marijuana and was released on bond. He will be in McIntosh County District Court at 1:30 p.m. Monday for an arraignment.
