Three Democrats eye Wagoner Co. commissioner nomination

By Cathy Spaulding
Phoenix Staff Writer

Three Democrats and one Republican are seeking the District 2 Wagoner County commissioner seat being vacated by Jerry Hefner after one term.

Larry Hall, Jason Rousselot and Chris Edwards are running in the Democratic primary Tuesday. The winner will face Republican Doug Disler in November.

Hall, who had been Wagoner County commissioner for 10 years, said he will “work hard for the residents of District 2 to build better roads and make them a commissioner they can be proud of.”

Rousselot said he wants to “provide leadership experience and improve the relationship between the county commissioner’s office and the general public.”

Edwards said county residents asked him to run because “to a person, they are tired of all the county politics as usual and the constant headlines in the newspaper of alleged political kickbacks and bickering over appointments because of political family entitlements.”

Hall said he wants to make sure that county money is spent wisely, that county crews are as productive as possible and that “every available outside dollar is brought to the district’s road and bridge fund.”

“Taxpayers deserve the most efficient, most productive government possible,” he said.

Rousselot said that, in light of natural disasters that hit the county over three years, he wants to develop a long-range plan to coordinate with the state Legislature, cities and towns, fire departments and emergency management. He said he also wants to work with cities, towns and school districts “to ensure we are in full support of the taxpaying citizens of Wagoner County.”

Edwards said he wants to make the commissioner’s office more accessible to residents and to be more proactive in preventive maintenance by doing a better job at sealing and rejuvenating existing roads.

“It’s time to start using the right materials on the roads,” he said. “We need a commissioner who will plan the work and work the plan, who will prioritize and not show favoritism to pet projects.”

Hall said he’s a “very intense, goal-oriented person.”

He said that, as county commissioner, he was able to obtain an average of more than $300,000 a year in state and federal money to help fund road and bridge construction.

Rousselot, who worked in the Wagoner County Election Board for six years, said he has “proven leadership and the ability to get along with other county, municipal and school entities.”

Edwards said he is qualified because of more than 17 years’ experience “in every job from laborer, equipment operator, to road and bridge foreman for Wagoner County.
