A Eufaula woman who admitted she had a gambling problem told the FBI she may have embezzled as much as $219,000 from the Eufaula Indian Community Smokeshop.
A federal judge sentenced Wana Lea Mitchell, 45, Thursday to five months in federal prison for embezzlement and theft. She pleaded guilty in March.
Mitchell also was ordered to make restitution of $107,137.76 to the smokeshop. U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling said Mitchell confessed to voiding cigarette sales and keeping the cash. She said she took the money as a “convenience,” Sperling said.
She remains free on bond, and U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White ordered she report to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons at noon on Sept. 5.
