Copper thieves to face charges By Donna HalesPhoenix Sports Writer The rural areas near Wagoner, Haskell and Muskogee have been especially hard hit in the last few weeks. The thieves have been taking 500 to 1,000 feet of line at one time, Windstream officials said.
At least two telephone poles holding the wire have been broken recently. Other times, they have pulled the wire down and cut large sections from it, loaded it up and took off. Some of those taking the wire are stripping the copper and then burning what’s left. Farmer and Banks are asking that anyone who sees suspicious burning in rural areas or unknown vehicles around rural areas where something doesn’t look quite right to call authorities. “Take license tag numbers and call us,” Banks said.
