Nursing shortage hits more than hospitals By Keith PurtellPhoenix Staff Writer Jerri Waits, office manager for Sol Amor Hospice, said they face challenges with wage competition and just the general nursing shortage.
“We also face competition from contracting nurses, who get a higher wage to do a yearly contract at a specific location,” she said. “Hospitals are most definitely competition, as are nursing homes.” Waits said she is grateful for those nurses who do take on the duties of hospice care. “The good hospice nurses are compassionate, loving and able to treat the patient as family,” she said. “I think the type of nurses who do hospice work are special gifts from God. Not everyone can do hospice work.” Waits said they recruit through newspaper ads and word of mouth, which seem to be working so far. “A lot of nurses come to us, also,” she said. “We would always like to have extra nurses, but it seems to be on an even keel right now.”
