TAHLEQUAH —The Cherokee Nation will be offering Cherokee language classes in several area communities within the tribe’s 14-county jurisdictional area this fall.
Cherokee Nation’s Cultural Resource Center is sponsoring the free 10-week community language classes, which begin in October and run through December.
The class schedule is as follows:
• In Muskogee County, language classes will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. beginning Oct. 15 at the Porum Senior Citizens Center and running for 10 consecutive Thursdays. The instructor will be Dorothy Powell.
• Tahlequah classes taught by J.C. Lowe will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., beginning Oct. 8 on 10 consecutive Thursdays in the Osiyo Training Room. The Osiyo Training Room is behind the Cherokee Nation Gift Shop at the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex on U.S. 62.
• Language classes for Sequoyah County will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. starting Oct. 13 at the Marble City School. Classes will run for 10 consecutive Tuesdays. Instructor is George Byrd.
• Classes in Adair County will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will start Oct. 12 at the Indian Capital Technology Center in Stilwell and will continue for 10 consecutive Mondays. Marie Eubanks will instruct the class.
Classes are beginner level and are open to anyone with an interest in learning the Cherokee language. Classes will include an introduction to the Cherokee syllabary system of writing.
