Muskogee Mayor John Tyler Hammons is to appear Oct. 24 on the Fox Network show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” he said Friday. The show airs locally at 7 p.m. on Tulsa’s Fox 23 channel. A watch party is being organized by the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce at Mahylon’s, 3300 Chandler Road. The event will be open to the community, Hammons said. The segment was taped in August. Hammons said he cannot reveal how much money he won in the episode, but he can discuss being on the show. “It was a lot of fun to do,” Hammons said. “Jeff Foxworthy (the host), is a very friendly, down-to-earth person. He was a lot of fun.” Hammons’ appearance was during a Celebrity Week taping. Among those he met on the set was Gene Simmons, lead singer for the rock group “Kiss.” Hammons has received a lot of media attention since being elected Muskogee’s mayor in May. He was interviewed several times during the Republican National Convention as the youngest mayor in America. He turned 20 years old during the convention and is a student at Northeastern State University.
