“A Framework for Understanding Poverty” will be presented at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the southeast room at Muskogee Public Library. Heather Jones, instructional coach for Muskogee Public Schools, will present the program.

Ruby Payne, author of “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” and founder of aha!Process, has worked since 1995 to help raise the achievement levels of individuals from poverty. Her premise is that one reason people find poverty so difficult to escape is that they are unaware of the “hidden rules” that govern thought and behavior in the various economic classes.

Jones will give an overview of the 12 key points of Payne's philosophy, so that the public can have a better understanding of the effects of poverty on the individual and the implications for the community.

“Business, industry, and education operate out of middle class norms and values,“ Jones said. “Understanding the hidden rules of class, whether upper, middle, or lower, can help a person navigate through life more successfully.”

All members of the public are invited to attend the workshop, which is offered as a community outreach through Muskogee Public Schools.

“We would like to participate in a community conversation about poverty and its effects,” said Melony Carey, public relations director for Muskogee Public Schools. “Attaining fluency in society is a goal that will help our students and community members achieve greater economic independence.”
