Firefighters Appreciation Day at Arrowhead Mall on Saturday will feature firetrucks and clowns, free smoke detectors and T-shirts and lots more, said Speck Plunkett of the county firefighters group.
The fire departments are helping the National Fire Prevention Association to celebrate Fire Prevention Week, which ends Saturday.
Giveaways include smoke detectors, 200 T-shirts for kids (so come early) and other items for children. Kids also will receive a foldout to design an escape plan for their home in case of fire.
Clowns and safety skits will abound, said Plunkett, fire chief for the Keefeton Volunteer Fire Department.
From 25 to 40 firetrucks and dozens of firefighters will be on hand, as well as fire equipment kids will love to see, Plunkett said. Some of the trucks will be inside the mall, others outside. The event will be near Sears.
Firefighters will be answering questions about everything from the trucks and equipment to safety.
Coloring calendars about fire safety will be given as long as supplies last. There is a place to write emergency phone numbers and to list everyone’s birthday.
Other items to be distributed include brochures with fire safety tips, Tot Finder stickers to place on your child’s bedroom door and a puzzle book that helps children learn to wind through the house to an escape route.
More than 2,500 people attended last year’s event, and Plunkett said they are hoping for more than 3,000 this year.
