AIDS quilt reminder of disease’s impact

Hulsey said he does not recall statistics on AIDS impact on hemophiliacs, people with a genetic disorder that keeps blood from clotting sufficiently.

“But I know it impacts a good number of us, whether we bleed to death or take a a risk,” he said.

AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By killing or damaging cells of the body’s immune system, HIV progressively destroys the body’s ability to fight infection. It is found in blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk. It is passed through sex, sharing needles, pregnancy or blood transfusion.

Dr. John Armitage, president of the Oklahoma Blood Institute, told people at the NSU ceremony that the institute seeks to make sure that blood supply remains safe, not only in Oklahoma, but also worldwide.
