$5,000 reward set to stop farm thefts

A $5,000 reward fund has been established by a number of county ranchers and businessmen who want to stop farm thefts, said Sheriff Charles Pearson.

“The way county government is structured, we cannot set up a Crimestoppers kind of program, but these individuals have put up the reward money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone stealing cattle and farm equipment, including trailers and four-wheelers,” he said.

Cattle thefts in the county stopped after a recent arrest and trailer and four-wheeler thefts have dropped by 75 percent, Pearson said.

“But the people who were helping him are still out there and we believe there are people who have the information to lead us to them,” he said.

Anyone with information on the thefts should call Jeff Smith at the Sheriff’s Office at 687-0202, Pearson said.
