<font color = green>P.M. UPDATE:</font> Cherokee Nation selected for substance abuse prevention project

— TAHLEQUAH — The Cherokee Nation was one of five tribal groups selected to assist in a project to promote substance abuse prevention programs in Native American communities throughout the United States.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recently announced the project.
“It is important for the Cherokee Nation because we will be able to gather data on Native American clients in a non-reservation rural setting,” said Dr. John Gastorf, director of behavioral health for the Cherokee Nation.
Once established, SAMHSA will serve as the hub for the best available information on services and programs for preventing substance abuse and related disorders in Native American populations.
