BREAKING NEWS: Police say man had meth on him

The man a Muskogee police officer shot and killed Tuesday morning has been identified as Brian Wayne Tackett, 42, of Fort Gibson, Capt. Scott Shields said.

Tackett was shot after he pulled a knife from his waistband while resisting arrest, Shields said.

Two special investigation officers, John "Robbie" Frazier and Jody Standridge, were attempting to arrest Tackett at the old Buckaroo Nursery, 5229 W. Okmulgee Ave., on felony arrest warrants, Shields said.

“The suspect refused to be arrested and pulled a knife, and Frazier pulled his weapon and shot,” Deputy Chief Johnny Teehee said. “Tackett was hit twice.”

Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service received a call at 8:59 a.m. from the police department.

“We attempted to resuscitate the person, but the person is now confirmed dead,” said Rebecca Smith, EMS spokesperson.

Teehee said Muskogee Regional Medical Center personnel found methamphetamine on Tackett.

Tackett was being sought on a felony arrest warrant for three probation violations from 2001 and 2007 criminal convictions, Teehee said.

The crimes involved included attempt to manufacture a controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine), possession of precursor substances, possession of red phosphorous, possession of controlled dangerous substance (meth) and possession of a firearm while committing a felony, Teehee said.

Frazier and Standridge acted within policy with their actions, Teehee said. Because of the circumstances, they were routinely placed on administrative leave with pay pending the completion of the investigation, Teehee said.

Even though one of the officers did not shoot, it is just as traumatic to be standing there when someone is shot, Teehee said.
