Warner police chief cleared in shooting

The shooting of a Warner man by Warner Police Chief Terry Thompson was ruled justifiable Friday.

Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore said in a written release that “based on all the evidence, including the statement of Matthew Hubback ... not only was Chief Thompson’s actions justified, it is the opinion of this office the actions were necessary to preserve the life of Mr. Hubback and secure the safety of a female there at that location.”

Thompson shot Hubback Dec. 2 following Thompson’s unsuccessful attempt to stop Hubback from cutting himself with a knife, an official said.

A court document stated Hubback, 33, “began drinking, ranting and cutting himself and threatened to kill himself or commit suicide ‘by cop.’”
