Dad held after boy burned on face

Prosecutors allege meth manufacturing involved

— Wagoner County prosecutors are awaiting more information before deciding how to proceed in a case against a man jailed on a child abuse complaint.

Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Gary Handley said Stanley Wayne Rice is held on $100,000 bond at the Wagoner County Detention Facility.

Rice, 38, was allegedly riding a bicycle in the Rocky Point area of Wagoner County with his 5-year old son, Tyler, on the handlebars.

“There was a Walmart sack with a shake-and-bake meth lab in it,” Handley said. “And it ended up exploding in the kid’s face.”

Rice was booked into jail Monday.

Handley said witnesses told investigators that Rice stripped the boy’s clothes off and ran off with him. He said Tyler had been released from the hospital and had been placed in Department of Human Services custody.

Tyler suffered multiple burns to the left side of his face, Handley said.

Wagoner County District Attorney Brian Kuester said his office had received the probable cause affidavit from the sheriff’s office, but not the full report.

“There are a number of different things (Rice) could be charged with,” Kuester said. “We’ll await the full report before deciding how to proceed. We always like to have as much information as possible before charges are filed.”

Handley said Rice has been placed on suicide watch in jail.

“He’s made attempts on his life while in custody,” he said.

Online court records show Rice pleaded guilty in 2002 to first-degree rape in a 1997 case.
