Sequoyah High School expands after-school, summer programs

— Sequoyah High School is expanding its after-school program and adding new learning opportunities for students this summer with a new $600,000 grant, according to a media release.

The high school is using a federal 21st Century Community Learning Center grant to help students increase college entrance ACT scores and strengthen math and reading scores, subject areas that statistically have shown Native American students struggle with most.

“We are pleased and excited to have this opportunity to enhance the academic, cultural and social experiences for our students,” said Sequoyah High School’s compliance manager Samantha Benn-Dukes, who co-wrote the grant. “The service learning opportunities combined with tutoring and enrichment will expose students to a variety of career options. Our students will be even better prepared for life beyond high school.”

The grant will allow the school to serve up to 120 students in its academic and enrichment after-school program for high school students who enroll. Tutoring in all subjects, as well as classes in art, culture and other electives, and service-learning opportunities will be available. The new additions are expected to double the number of students participating in after-school activities.

The school has after-school programs with the Boy and Girls Club and one day of Gifted and Talented activities.

The summer program will enroll up to 90 students, rising freshmen through 12th grade. It is tentatively scheduled for 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. May 28-June 21. Daily exercises, field trips, traditional arts and games and regular academics, including credit recovery, will be offered. A driver’s education course also is tentatively planned.

Sequoyah will partner with several community organizations and other Cherokee Nation departments to provide students with college and career resources and leadership building skills as part of the programs.
