Cherokees award grant to teacher

Barbara Leonard, a third-grade teacher at Creek Elementary, has been named a Cherokee Nation Scholar, an honor that came with a professional development grant for $2,607.88 from the Cherokee Nation and the Kirschner Trusts of Muskogee.

In a letter from the Cherokee Nation, Leonard was commended for her dedication to professional growth, betterment of herself, and most importantly, her students.

Leonard will use the grant to fund a trip to the Columbia University Summer Institute of Writing in New York in June.
