MPL sets drawing as incentive to sign up for library cards

Individuals who sign up for a Muskogee Public Library card may win a gift certificate, according to a media release.

The MPL is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month by offering new cardholders a chance at a gift certificate from Arrowhead Mall.

“We are asking people to come by and check us out,” Head Librarian Jan Bryant said in the release. “If they don’t have a card, they can sign up for one and be entered into a drawing.

The drawing will take place Oct. 1.

The American Library Association and libraries across the country are reminding parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

Library cards are free at the MPL to residents of the six counties of the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System. Borrowing privileges are usually granted immediately. Some form of identification and the signature of a guardian for children younger than 18 are required. The card is good at all 15 Eastern Oklahoma District Library System branches.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children, the release states. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

The MPL offers cardholders books, magazines, books on CD, movies, and computers. The library also offers free online access to eBooks, e-magazines, job and homework help, continuing education, downloadable audio books, and downloadable music of all kinds.

Libraries also offer a variety of programs to stimulate an interest in reading and learning. Preschool story hours expose young children to the joy of reading. Early Literacy stations encourage early learning while playing games. The Summer Reading Program keep children and teens reading during school vacation and have been shown to be the most important factor in avoiding the decrease in reading skills that educators refer to as “summer learning loss.”

There are a variety of other programs for all ages throughout the year.

The MPL is at 801 W. Okmulgee Ave.
