Suspect in fatal fight has bond set

Reports say victim threw first punch

— A Tahlequah man jailed in the December death of Randy Crowe will return to court in February after having his bond set Wednesday.

Kevin Lowe, 24, was arrested Tuesday on a manslaughter complaint for his involvement in what police believe was a fight that ended in Crowe’s death. Crowe, 23, was found unresponsive at 1:40 a.m. Dec. 18 in a Tahlequah alley on College Court, just a few blocks south of Choctaw Street.

Crowe, bleeding and suffering from a head injury, was flown to a Tulsa hospital where he died less than 48 hours later, Tahlequah police spokesman Brad Robertson said.

Police asked for help from the community and were “completely flooded” with responses, he said. Most of the tips led nowhere.

“Detective (Jeff) Haney had a lot to dig through, in terms of things that just ended up being complete dead ends,” Robertson said.

Haney eventually interviewed Lowe and another person who said they witnessed what happened in the alley that night. Robertson said those interviews led police to believe that Lowe was driving Crowe home from a bar that night when a fight ensued. Crowe swung at Lowe, who ducked and struck Crowe in the face in retaliation.

“I’m not sure if we know 100 percent what the trauma he suffered was,” Robertson said. “But a medical examiner’s office verbal report came back as some type of blunt force trauma, which lines up with what we were told in the interviews.”

Lowe was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond on the manslaughter complaint and a $10,000 bond for an application to revoke on a previous probation.

Lowe is to appear in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 13 for a sounding docket to determine a date for his preliminary hearing.
