Science teachers get hands-on experience

Nearly 30 middle school science teachers from across the state engaged in hands-on scientific research recently during the ConocoPhillips, Phillips 66 and Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Summer Science Institute.

The exploration experience on the OSSM campus in Oklahoma City included experiments in well-equipped labs, classroom demonstrations, lectures and two field trips to the National Storm Center in Norman and Federal Aviation Administration Oklahoma City Facility.

Topics from middle school science curriculum from the fields of biology, chemistry, geoscience and physics were covered during the five-day institute.

Sixth through eighth grade level teachers enhanced their science backgrounds while being offered new opportunities to transfer knowledge and skills to classroom instruction.

Consultation is provided by OSSM faculty during the next school year to support continuing science education in the classroom.

Each teacher receives a $300 stipend for successfully completing the institute. In addition, every participant also receives $100 worth of lab supplies to take back to their home schools.

Nationally ranked as a top public high school in the United States, OSSM provides an academically advanced curriculum in science and math to juniors and seniors across the state. Created through legislative action in 1983, the two-year residential public high school serves all Oklahoma schools and students through math contests, research, teacher training and outreach activities.
