Service League has long history of philanthropy

Service League of Muskogee was founded in 1937 and has the mission to encourage philanthropic involvement among women in the Muskogee community.

The organization is preparing for the annual scholarship program for senior girls in the Hilldale and Muskogee school districts. Applications are available from school counselors and may be returned to the counselors or mailed to the Service League.

A panel of three Service League members scores the applications and selects recipients based on grade point average, ACT/SAT scores, extracurricular activities, leadership and community involvement. The scholarship amounts and number of scholarships given vary based on program funds and the number of qualified applicants. Deadline for submission is May 1, and scholarships are distributed by mail in the summer.

To raise funds for scholarships, the Service League holds a golf tournament each spring at the Muskogee Country Club with anywhere from eight to 16 teams competing. The individual entry fee is $130, the team fee is $500, and sponsorship opportunities range from $150 to $1,000. This year’s tournament will be May 3. Registration for the four-man scramble is open until 11 a.m. the day of the tournament. A free lunch is served from 11 a.m. to noon, and the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

The day doesn’t end with the close of the tournament. Festivities continue with live music from Reversing Radio starting between 7 and 8 p.m., and a banner auction featuring the work of local artists. The evening entertainment and auction are open to the public.

The Service League’s other annual fundraiser, Turkey Stomp, is held the Friday after Thanksgiving, and funds are distributed to local organizations such as Hope Kids, MONARCH, WISH, CASA, and the Kelly B. Todd Center. This event includes a live band, appetizers and drinks. Businesses sponsor the event by renting tables displaying their names and logos.

Other projects include adopting families for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year, two families from the Hilldale school district received full Thanksgiving dinners. At Christmas, two families received gifts, stockings and paper and ribbon to wrap the gifts.

Smaller monthly projects to help families or groups in the community are identified by members. One suggestion turned into an annual event. Each Valentine’s Day the Service League holds a dance at the Oklahoma School for the Blind. Members bring their personal music collections and supply refreshments for a fun evening that is a favorite with students. Vice President Megan Brock said some students at this year’s dance had been practicing their moves all year long.

New members are recruited each April at the Service League Tea where potential members are invited to learn about the organization. This year, six women were recruited and will join in August, bringing the membership to 24.
