Families homeless after fire

Apartment building burns Wednesday

Two families are displaced after an apartment caught fire at 5:47 p.m. Wednesday at Keetoowah Village Apartments at York Street and Harris Road.

“The bottom apartment caught on fire. We are unsure what caused it,” said Muskogee Police Officer Michael Lippman.

No one was injured.

“Looks like it started in the living room,” said Assistant Fire Chief Alan Jones.

The downstairs apartment on the southwest corner of the building had charred black walls and broken windows.  The estimated property damage is around $15,000, Jones said.

“It appears to be completely destroyed,” Lippman said.

One tenant was overcome when she saw her apartment was destroyed. She began screaming and had to be held back by police. Neighbors consoled the sobbing woman with hugs and a warm blanket.

Firefighters aired out the apartment upstairs using a large fan. Lippman said the woman who lived upstairs was pregnant.

“The Red Cross was notified and are on their way to assist them,” Lippman said about the families.
