Historical society offers teachers workshop

— The Oklahoma Historical Society announces the Oklahoma Civil War Teachers’ Institute, set for July 16-18 in Tahlequah.

The OHS will host the Teachers’ Institute to explore the war’s impact on Indian Territory as part of the Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration that will be observed through 2015. Conference participants will visit important landmarks of the war, including the Fort Gibson Historic Site, Honey Springs Battlefield, the George M. Murrell Home and more.

Oklahoma teachers will explore nontraditional classroom Civil War experiences as well as field trips, interactive activities and other items to share with students.

Teachers will each receive a resource kit with classroom activities and lesson guides. Cost for the program is $100 per person and includes materials and meals. A limit of 15 teachers will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
