Beans bring bucks for Relay

A local Relay For Life team is offering a cure for hunger today at the Muskogee Civic Center and offering a chance to help make progress to find a cure for cancer.

“We have a ton of beans,” Diane Few said. “I hope a lot of people show up.”

Few is the Relay For Life team captain of Triple C’s or Country Cousins for a Cure. This is the third year Few has been involved with the Relay For Life organization.

Relay teams help raise money for the American Cancer Society through events like the bean dinner. Last year, the Muskogee community raised $60,000.

Melissa McClain, Relay For Life Event chairman, said this year’s goal is $68,000. The money raised goes to help local American Cancer Society programs including the Wig Room, Road to Recovery, and Look Good, Feel Better.

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2014, there will be an estimated 1,665,540 new cancer cases diagnosed and 585,720 cancer deaths in the United States. Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths.

For Diane Few, those numbers hit close to home.

“My aunt passed away in May 2011, and my cousin in February 2013,” Few said.

Cancer has claimed the lives of some of her family members, but she said her family sticks together. The Triple C’s team is made up of her cousins and close friends.

“We are all cousins, and we grew up in the country,” Few said.

Few said donations from Homeland, Charlie’s Chicken, and Save-A-Lot helped to make the bean dinner possible.

“Come out and support it,” Few said. “It helps a lot of people.”
