P.M. UPDATE: Muskogee woman appointed to Oklahoma Arts Council

OKLAHOMA CITY – Governor Mary Fallin has appointed Cassandra Gaines to the Oklahoma Arts Council.

Gaines, of Muskogee, is Muskogee Civic Center director, Muskogee Multicultural Tourism coordinator and manager of the Roxy Theater. She is also the president of Women Who Care, a non-profit organization that reaches out to women in underserved areas to offer free mammograms.

She will serve a two-year term expiring in July 2016, pending confirmation from the Oklahoma Senate.

Gaines has been involved in tourism and recreation since 1982. In 1996, she helped establish the Muskogee Multicultural Tourism Department.

“Cassandra Gaines is a dedicated leader and strong advocate for the arts in Oklahoma,” Fallin said. “With her years of experience and knowledge, I know she will serve this council well.”

Gaines has been recognized with several awards throughout her career, including the TIA Destiny Special Projects Award in 2000. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame in 2002. The International African American Culinary Arts Institute recognized her with an award for her work in Oklahoma in 2004.
