Wheels put in motion for St. Jude

ECC Trike-A-Thon fundraiser starts with adults’ races

Threats of Monday morning showers couldn’t stop the Early Childhood Center from helping other children.

The school simply brought its annual Trike-A-Thon celebration indoors. The event raises money and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

“The main thing kids learn is good character,” ECC teacher Robin Allen said. “They’ve been talking about helping sick children.”

Screeches and shouts filled the ECC cafeteria as students cheered on favorite teachers, aides, administrators, even custodians riding trikes across the floor.

This year, ECC students collected money and pledges before Monday’s races. ECC Principal Malinda Lindsey said students raised $1,200 this year. Over the next week, ECC students will ride little red tricycles around the school yard to make good on their pledges. Pledges were made for each lap a student rides.

Lindsey said people can continue to contribute online by going to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital website.

Allen said many of her students’ parents contributed online as well as in cash.

ECC teacher Jamie Lee said her class collected $100 “from family and friends.”

“They took home envelopes, collected money and brought them back,” Lee said.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is known for its research and treatment of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

The hospital sponsors Trike-A-Thons across the United States. The goal not only is to raise money, but also teach riding safety, Lindsey said.

Allen said children got books on bicycle safety for participating.
