Volunteers to help Wagoner students get ready

Free haircuts, vision and dental exams on offer

— Wagoner students can get their eyes and teeth checked and their hair cut before they head back to school.

Free screenings and haircuts for kids are part of a Back to School Fair set for 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Teague Elementary, 700 N. Story Ave.

“We just want to help kids prepare for school,” said Teri Hoffman, a social worker for Wagoner Public Schools who is coordinating the event.

Area stylists, including some from Spot Style Shop, will donate the haircuts, she said.

Jennifer Milton, a stylist at Spot Style Shop, said: “I was a single mother for a few years. I know what it’s like to struggle. This is a way I like to give back to the community.”

Milton said she and other workers have done free back-to-school haircuts for four years. She said the events attracted “loads of kids.”

Optometrist Dr. John Lindsay said he’ll do a “thorough screening” that includes checking how well the kids’ eyes see in distance and proximity and whether they have any obvious problems or diseases.

“We see children who would slip through the cracks,” Lindsay said. “We’ve picked up on several children needing glasses, some with eye problems, including amblyopia, which can be corrected.”

Hoffman said the Back to School Fair also will feature information on nutrition, health and wellness.

Area firefighters will be at the fair to explain fire safety. The Wagoner Police Department, Wagoner County Sheriff’s office and the district attorney also will have information, she said.

“We’ll have youth volunteers from the middle school and high school,” Hoffman said, adding that there will be free face painting.

“We’re trying to get more of the community to get involved,” she said.
