Boater surrenders in fatal collision

Craft’s operator left scene during search for victim

— A boater whom troopers believe to have caused a fatal collision on Lake Eufaula turned himself in to the McIntosh County District Attorney’s Office on Monday, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Ryan Shumway, 30, of McAlester was driving the 1999 Crownline 20-foot ski boat that crashed into a pontoon boat and a Stingray boat on July 4, an OHP report states.

Gary McIninch, 55, of Oklahoma City was ejected from the pontoon, and two children, ages 6 and 7, were injured. The collision occurred as boats were leaving the fireworks display just outside of Eufaula Cove shortly after 10 p.m.

McIninch’s body was recovered at 7:05 p.m. Saturday approximately one mile east of Eufaula Cove and about 400 yards north of the shoreline in 17 feet of water in McIntosh County.

McIninch was ejected from the pontoon, and the operator of the ski boat circled the other boats and asked whether everyone was OK. The occupants of the pontoon and the Stingray told the operator of the ski boat that McIninch was missing and began to search for him.

During the search, the occupants of the pontoon and the Stingray noticed the ski boat had left.

Neither Shumway nor his three passengers was injured. Shumway and Janai Shumway, 32, were not wearing personal flotation devices. Dylan Shumway, 10, and Ayden Shumway, 8, were wearing them.
