MLT wraps up season with awards

It was a night of celebration at the Muskogee Little Theatre on Saturday night.

“For the actors and performers it’s the Oscars,” said MLT Executive Director Coni Wetz. “It’s also a volunteer awards banquet.”

During the 2013-2014 season MLT saw five shows take place on its stage. The season ticket holders placed their votes for the best actors, actresses, and shows.

“We are celebrating the fiscal year closing on June 30,” Wetz said.

Norman Thygesen and Andrea Wilcoxen hosted the event and kept the crowd entertained. In addition to seeing the presentation of the awards, guests got a sneak peek performance of the upcoming musical “Cabaret” and a song from “Ring of Fire.”

Big winners of the night included Wilcoxen and Tawny Easterling.

The Actress of the Year and Bernice Sikes Award recipient, Wilcoxen said receiving a “Miltie” is a wonderful recognition.

“It never feels like it’s just me,” Wilcoxen said. “It takes everyone to make a good performance.”

Easterling walked away with three “Milties” for the season. She said being at the Milties was like being at home.

“This is my extended family,” Easterling said.

“Last season MLT was very good to me,” Easterling said. “I can’t complain.”

Robbie Anderson received the Actor of the Year award.

Anderson played the character Igor in “Young Frankenstein.”

“This is my first Milties,” Anderson said. “It’s kind of refreshing to see people come together to do art.”

“Young Frankenstein” won top honors for “Show of the Year” for the 2013-2014 season.

The night’s entertainment included songs performed from 2013-2014 musicals  “Rent,” “Young Frankenstein” and “The Little Mermaid, Jr.”

David Eckerson, MLT board president, honored the two capital campaign committees for their hard work raising more than $1 million for the new facility. Committee leader Mike Leonard received the Kerslake Award for his work in the capital campaign.
