Teen in Macy’s parade

MHS Color Guard member to perform

Muskogee High School Color Guard member Chelsi Jacobs will have a very good reason to sit close to the television today Thanksgiving Day.

Her best friend and fellow color guard member Emma Hix will be marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“I just want to tell her I love her,” Jacobs said. “I wish her the best of luck, and, of course, we’ll all be watching. She texted me and told me that if she touches her nose, she’s saying ‘Hi’ to all of us.”

Hix, an MHS junior, has been involved in the color guard since she was a freshman. In May, she sent a video to Macy’s Great American Marching Band to apply to be a member of the color guard team for the parade, and she made it.

Lauren Fort, Hix’s instructor at MHS, said it never came a surprise to her.

“Emma (Hix) is our captain,” Fort said. “I came in to the program, and she showed incredible leadership right away. This is a great opportunity for her. I know I’ll be in tears and just so happy for her while I’m watching.”

According to the Macy’s Great American Marching Band website, the inaugural march was in 2006, and will feature musicians and color guard members from all 50 states. There will be approximately 185 musicians and 50 flags and dancers.

Fort said there wouldn’t be a watch party because of the holiday, but each member confirmed they would have their eyes glued to the screen searching for their team member.

Miranda Walters, a fellow color guard member, said Hix was awesome and amazing leader. Faith Innis echoed that sentiment.

Jacobs said she and Hix have been friends ever since they met in color guard their freshman year.

“She was so excited to get the phone call,” Jacobs said. “She sent me a text right after she found out.”

Participants in the parade will be performing for approximately 2.5 million people along the parade route, and 50 million watching at home, the website states.

At least nine of those viewers, Fort and the rest of the Guard, will be anxiously tending to their DVRs, each hoping for a glimpse of Hix, and even more, a glimpse of her scratching her nose.

Hix and her family left for New York over the weekend, Fort said, and they were unable to return phone calls during their stay.
