Basketball, bingo and free health checks are part of a Rotary Rave set for Saturday at Rotary Park.
The Rotary Rave is the first of three park festivals that Timothy Baptist Church will host this summer, said its senior pastor, Kelly Payne. The other two will be Aug. 2 at Robison Park and Aug. 23 at Beckman Park.
Payne said the church used to have summer bashes at the church.
“But this year we decided to reach out to the areas of town,” Payne said.
Saturday’s party runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature free refreshments, including cotton candy and hot dogs.
“We’ll have bingo under a big tent for people who want to stay in the shade,” Payne said, adding that winners will receive gifts.
The Rotary Rave will feature door prizes, including a $200 Wal-Mart gift card, he said.
“We’ll have a lot of things for the kids — face painting, blow-up toys — the park already has a splash pad,” Payne said.
People also can get free health checks, including blood pressure and heart rate, he said.
“We have nurses who attend church here, and they put together all the health checks,” he said.
Church member Danny Parson said a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will feature five divisions: a co-ed tournament for ages 12 and younger, ages 13 to 16 for boys and for girls, and 17 and older for men and for women.
“Winners of each division will get a T-shirt,” Parson said.
Payne said church members have helped with the project.
“Sunday night, we were out at the park and we canvassed the neighborhood; 60 showed up to help,” Payne said. “We’ve had 60 to 70 members to sign up for the party Saturday.”
