City issues advisory on drinking water

Area residents with severely compromised immune systems, infants and the elderly are being advised to exercise caution when consuming Muskogee’s drinking water.

Recent tests revealed the presence of haloacetic acids at levels that violate safe drinking water standards. The violations, which are required to be reported, occurred between April 2013 and March.

City of Muskogee officials said the situation does not constitute an emergency. Consuming water that contains elevated levels of haloacetic acids for a period of several years, however, could exacerbate some people’s chances of getting cancer.

Haloacetic acids are formed when chlorine and some other disinfectants are used to control microbial contaminants. Those elements react with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter present in the water being treated.

For information, call water plant Superintendent Mike Tickel or chemist Stephen Morton at (918) 684-6380.
