Woman slain; shooter sought

Woman found dead with multiple wounds

No arrests have been made in the slaying of a Muskogee woman who police say was shot to death.

Rachelle Louise Hayes, 48, was found by a homeowner at 328 Douglas St. around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, said Cpl. Michael Mahan.

The homeowner told police he left his residence about 6 p.m. When he returned around 11:10 p.m., he found Hayes on his porch, Mahan said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Hayes had multiple gunshot wounds, Mahan said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police initially believed that the victim was homeless and living in the Muskogee area at the time of her death. Further investigation has shown that she was a resident of Muskogee, Mahan said.

Neighbors told police they thought they may have heard gunshots between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., that evening but dismissed the sounds as fireworks, Mahan said.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide is asked to contact Muskogee police.

This is the fourth homicide of the year for Muskogee:

• On Jan. 22, Richard Kosterlitzky, 30, was found dead at 213 E. Hancock St. He died from a shotgun wound, police said. Justin Capps, 18, was taken into custody on a first-degree murder complaint. After being in custody for almost a week, Capps was released. Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore said at the time that the homicide was unfavorable but would not result in a murder charge.

• In April, the district attorney’s office ruled that Kyle Ford, 30, was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed Joshua Pride Salyer, 40, on March 29. Ford told officers that he shot Salyer after he and two other men came toward him in an aggressive manner. Ford said his next-door neighbor had knocked on his door and asked for help. When he stepped outside, he saw three men at her house. He told the men to leave, but they kept coming toward him. Ford said he fired his gun when Salyer was about a foot away.

• On June 15, Muskogee police were called to the Pines Apartments at 3010 Denver Ave. They found Alexander Ethan Garfield, 23, deceased in one of the apartments. Later that day, Deontee Eugene Newton, 21, was arrested. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 14.

According to the Uniform Crime Report, one murder was reported in Muskogee in 2012 and one in 2013. Six murders were reported in 2010 and also in 2011.
