Newsweek and Daily Beast columnist to speak at NSU

John Avlon has been selected to deliver this year’s Larry Adair lectureship at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Northeastern State University in the Webb Auditorium in Tahlequah, a media release states.

Avlon is the senior columnist for Newsweek and The Daily Beast as well as a CNN contributor. He is also the author of “Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics and Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America.” He is also an editor and has appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Real Time with Bill Maher, PBS and C-Span.

When lecturing, Avlon discusses America’s broken political system and shares with audiences tangible opportunities for constructive change. He is a registered Independent, who believes that hyper-partisanship is hurting our country because it is stopping us from solving serious problems we face.

Avlon is the former chief speechwriter for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and after the terrorist attacks on 9/11, he and his team were responsible for writing the eulogies for all firefighters and police officers murdered in the destruction of the World Trade Center.

He has spoken at several schools and won the National Society of Newspaper Columnists’ award for best online column in 2012.

The Larry Adair Lectureship Series was established in 2004 by friends and family of former Oklahoma Speaker of the House Larry Adair and the NSU Foundation to create an annual forum to engage students in politics, government and public policy.

There also will be a book signing following the lecture in the Webb Auditorium lobby. This event is free and open to the public.
