Admin spots change at MPS

Director of elementary ed, director of secondary ed slots created

Two new positions are being created under an administrative shuffle at Muskogee Public Schools.

The new positions, director of elementary education and director of secondary education, replace the position of executive director of curriculum and instruction.

Muskogee Superintendent Mike Garde said the realignment helps the district transition to the Common Core standards, a new curriculum considered more rigorous than the Priority Academic Student Skills. The realignment also will help schools move into the 1:1 initiative in which each student has a laptop or tablet computer, he said.

“As the district prepares to implement the 1:1 initiative in grades 7-12 and continue the transition to Common Core, it became evident that we needed a realignment to assure focus on teaching and learning at both the secondary and elementary levels,” Garde said in a prepared statement.

Peggy Jones, who had been the executive director of curriculum and instruction, will become principal of Alice Robertson Junior High, effective July 1. She replaces Dr. Edwin Strickland.

Garde said the restructuring allows the two directors “to focus on the unique needs of curriculum, staff development and instruction at these two levels.”

The director of secondary education will be Melony Carey, who most recently was MPS director of communications, professional development and the gifted and talented programs. The district is seeking a director of secondary education and has placed a job opening on its website. Garde said he hopes to have the elementary education director’s post filled by the July Board of Education meeting.

Carey said each director will handle professional development and gifted and talented programs.

Garde said the district plans to hire a marketing and public relations person. He said the school board will discuss the position in July. The addition of the marketing/public relations position would be the only additional cost to the district, Garde said in the prepared statement.
