Man charged with assault on girlfriend

Suspect arrested after report of man ‘beating on pregnant student’

A Muskogee man was charged Friday with domestic assault and battery against a pregnant woman.

Lionel Reynard Chapman, 18, pleaded not guilty in Muskogee County District Court and was ordered to return to court at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 11 for a misdemeanor disposition docket. At that time, a date will be set for trial.

Chapman was arrested Wednesday after campus police reported Chapman, a Muskogee High School student, assaulted his pregnant juvenile girlfriend, also a student.

Campus Police Officer Ronald Remer filed an affidavit that states he had received a report that “a student was beating on a pregnant student.”

Remer states he reviewed video and saw Chapman “aggressively grabbing, pushing and pulling hair of the juvenile victim.”

Chapman was released from the Muskogee County/City Detention Facility on $10,000 bond.

Two women stood before Special District Judge Robin Adair as Chapman was charged Friday. One of the women spoke directly to Adair.

“Sir, this is the minor. She wants to say something,” said the woman, who did not identify herself.

“The district attorney’s office is down on the first floor,” Adair said.

Chapman and the women did not speak with the district attorney following court, said District Attorney Larry Moore.

Moore said that even if the juvenile girl did not wish for her boyfriend to be prosecuted, the state could prosecute him anyway.

“You don’t come to school to fight,” Moore said. “You’ve got to know there will be ramifications. We can’t have violence in the school.”

If found guilty, Chapman could be imprisoned for up to a year.
