OSB student serves as page for senator

Charity Pickup a page for Sen. Earl Garrison

Charity Pickup, a sophomore at the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee, said she believes youth need to get to know their lawmakers so they can help influence legislation passed at the state capitol.

Pickup served as a page at for State Sen. Earl Garrison from April 8 to 11, according to a media release.

Pages check in each morning and spend the day running errands for lawmakers and their staffs. They also take part in learning the Legislative process.

After high school, Charity wants to attend the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo., where she plans to major in music theater education.

“My long-term goal is to open a local theater program for blind and visually impaired people and then branch it out to other people with disabilities,” she said. “They would still be held to the same standards as a regular community theater.”

Charity chose that path after she said she took a leap of faith and auditioned for a role in a Muskogee Little Theater production of “The Sound of Music.”

Pickup's love of performing and music is a gift she now wants to share.

“I want to help people who have even the smallest interest along the same path,” she said in the release.

Charity is the daughter of Jamie Pickup and has a brother, Aidan, and a sister, Olivia.
