Ex-Cherokee employee cites experience, pledges service

— Last in a series of Cherokee Nation Tribal Council candidates.

Sherri Doolin of Braggs faces incumbent David Thornton Sr. and candidate Dink Scott in the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council election June 22.

Doolin, a married mother of six, is a small-business owner.

She has experience as a city commissioner in Collinsville, and she worked for the Cherokee Nation in human services at an office in Catoosa.

“I absolutely loved my job and my coworkers,” Doolin said. “After being widowed, I met my husband, Danny, through volunteering with the Cherokee Nation clothing voucher program. He had also been widowed. This is what brought me to Braggs.”

Doolin worked for the Cherokee Nation until May 2012, when she resigned in good standing to be able to run for tribal council, she said.

Her experience is what makes her the best choice for District 5, she said.

“I work well with others and believe in trying to come to solutions that will serve the Cherokee people first,” Doolin said.

She feels as though she can help lead best by serving, she said.

“I decided to run simply to serve the Cherokee people and my tribe, who have given so much to me through culture, language, traditions and assisting elderly family members in their final years,” she said.

Taking care of the Cherokee people and their interests will always be first for Doolin, she said.

“I plan to represent the Cherokee people of District 5,” she said. “I believe I have an energy and a heart to serve the Cherokee people first, not the council or chief, present or future.”

Doolin brings 20 years of “servanthood and stewardship” experience.

“I will work ‘with’ others, but I will work ‘for’ the Cherokee people,” she said.

Thornton did not respond to requests for an interview regarding the election.
